Classified First Growth property Château Coutet boasts a reputation for the superb quality of the sweet wines it produces and is today in the hands of Philippe and Dominique Baly. The 2010 release is a sumptuous blend of 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle, aged for 18 months in 100% oak barrels. A beautiful golden color, the wine’s fine nose brings in lovely hints of very ripe exotic and citrus fruits as well as vanilla, with a tinge of subtle and elegant floral aromas. On the palate, the wine is fleshy, round and dulcet with a perfect balance between power, freshness and finesse, enhanced by the persistent aromatic zests of citrus, mingled with notes of preserved apricot. The finish is dense and rich, yet gives an impression of ‘crispness’ with the presence of fresh fruits.

The 2010 Coutet demanded some coaxing like the 2009, eventually offering sensual aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine and quince, although I feel the 2009 has a greater presence. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, fresh and focused with commendable weight. There is a deft touch of spice here and superb tension on the finish - a quintessential Coutet. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate. Neal Martin13th February 2024
