Domaine Auguste Clape Côte-du-Rhône 2021 is a medium-to-full-bodied Syrah from the northern Rhône region of France. Auguste Clape is one of the most celebrated names in the northern Rhône and is widely credited with transforming the region`s reputation from a négociant-centred model to one in which quality-focused domaines bottled their own wines. Domaine Auguste Clape`s Côte-du-Rhône 2021 comes from two small plots of old Syrah vines – one planted within Saint-Péray AOC, the other just beneath the boundary of Cornas. The wine is matured in concrete tanks with a short period in old foudres. It`s full and earthy with richly spiced red and black Syrah fruit.

The 2021 Côtes-du-Rhône comes in slightly below the 2021. Reductive at first, a few minutes of aeration unlock shy red fruits alongside dried herbs and meaty undertones. Much more interesting on the palate than the nose, this 2021 red offers a juicy core of red fruits, finely balanced by refreshing acidity. This should be enjoyed over the next three years.Nicolas Greinacher28th March 2024

Cask/tank sample. Intense blackberry nose – cassis and roasted meats. Certainly not lacking in structure. The tannins are tight and there is a lifted balsamic note through the wine. Intense and impressive. (AC)Alistair Cooper4th October 2022
