Château de Fonsalette Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Syrah 1998 is a rare, 100% Syrah bottling produced by the Reynaud family of Château Rayas. The fruit comes from the Fonsalette estate in the northern part of the Vaucluse, where the soils are a mix of sand and clay. The 1998 vintage was legendary for its concentration, and this Syrah is one of the most robust and dark-fruited wines in the Reynaud portfolio. Unlike their Grenache-based wines, this bottling shows intense notes of blackberry, liquorice and black olives, with the signature Rayas spice. It was aged in old oak foudres, which have allowed the tannins to soften while maintaining a fresh acidity.

The amazing 1995 Chateau Fonsalette Cuvee Syrah should be cellared for 10-15 years. The wine is ferociously tannic, but, wow, what extraordinary intensity of flavor it possesses. With its viscous texture, and peppery, smoky, sweet cassis, and truffle-scented nose and flavors, this wine offers a sensational mouthful of brutally savage and intense Syrah grown in the southern Rhone. I suspect this wine will evolve for 30-40+ years.

Medium ruby. Pure, subdued aromas of raspberry, tar, pepper and youthful syrah vegetility. Extremely tightly wrapped and much less expressive today than the '99. Penetrating flavors of black fruits and pepper firmed by sound acids. Finishes with tongue-dusting tannins. This one is going to need extended cellaring.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2001
