Château de Fonsalette Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Syrah 1995 is a pure Syrah from the Reynaud family, grown on the clay and sand soils of the Fonsalette woods. The 1995 vintage produced wines with high tannins and great structural intensity, requiring decades to fully resolve. This wine was vinified at Château Rayas using traditional methods and aged in very old, neutral oak barrels. It presents a deep garnet colour and a complex nose of smoked meat, tapenade and dark forest fruits. The palate is dense and savoury, with the initial toughness of the 1995 tannins now replaced by a firm, velvety grip. This release is a definitive example of southern Syrah, offering a rugged, earthy profile that is distinct from the more floral and elegant Grenache-based bottlings.

The amazing 1995 Chateau Fonsalette Cuvee Syrah should be cellared for 10-15 years. The wine is ferociously tannic, but, wow, what extraordinary intensity of flavor it possesses. With its viscous texture, and peppery, smoky, sweet cassis, and truffle-scented nose and flavors, this wine offers a sensational mouthful of brutally savage and intense Syrah grown in the southern Rhone. I suspect this wine will evolve for 30-40+ years.
