Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée 2001 by M Chapoutier showcases the granitic Syrah terroir of the northern Rhône Valley. The vineyard, located on the Côte Blonde, features soils rich in chloritic and ferruginous micaschists, contributing to the wine`s structure. Grapes are harvested at peak maturity, undergo total destemming, and are vinified in concrete vats with regular pump-overs to enhance extraction. The wine ages for 14 to 18 months in 225-litre barrels. Chapoutier is recognised for its commitment to biodynamic practices.

Dark red. Very ripe but somewhat stunted aromas of blackcurrant, plum, nuts and woodsmoke. Concentrated, ripe and full; very rich but rather uncompromisingly dry. The slightly roasted red fruit and nut flavors show more breadth than personality now, but this young Cote-Rotie is unusually fat and persistent, finishing with dusty, ripe tannins.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
