The 2020 Côte-Rôtie Château d`Ampuis from E Guigal is a blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, sourced from various lieux-dits across the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Aged for 38 months in 100% new French oak, this vintage reveals a complex aromatic tapestry of dark fruits, smoked meat, lavender and spices. The tannins are firm and structured, promising a long life ahead, with the potential for development over two decades.

Showing a bit of cedar and vanilla at this stage, Guigal`s 2020 Cote Rotie Chateau d`Ampuis is a bit less impressive than other recent vintages. It still has plenty of cherry fruit, but this medium to full-bodied effort comes across as slightly simple and chunky. I expect it will smooth out and add layers during its élevage.

The 2020 Côte-Rôtie Château d`Ampuis wafts from the glass with loads of graphite, violet, cured meat, wood smoke, menthol and predominantly black fruits. The massive tannic structure indicates that the 2020 will be a long-distance runner and shouldn’t be touched until 2030. It closes with excellent grip on the complex finish. Still, I have a slight preference for the bolder 2019 rendition.Nicolas Greinacher28th March 2024

Benchmark for Côte-Rôtie excellence

Founded in the village of Ampuis by Etienne Guigal in 1946, Domaine Guigal is one of the most revered and unwaveringly consistent estates in the Rhône Valley, and is often seen as a benchmark for Côte-Rôtie Syrah. A pioneer of the single-vineyard concept in this appellation Guigal is best known for its top three wines, known affectionately as the 'La-Las', which is short for La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque – the domaine's top Syrah vineyards .

Other notable vineyards of this 75-hectare estate include La Doriane (the source of Guigal's Condrieu), Ex-Voto (used for Hermitage) and Vignes de l'Hospice (the source of one of Guigal's top St-Joseph Syrahs). All of these have become benchmark wines of their respective appellations. The Crozes-Hermitage appellation completes the roster of Northern Rhône estate vineyards.

Since 2006, Guigal has made a substantial investment in appellations of the Southern Rhône, using top-quality purchased fruit from trusted growers in Châteaneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and the Côtes du Rhône.
