Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde Guigal 1996 is a Northern Rhône red blend primarily made from Syrah, complemented by a small proportion of Viognier. This magnum format has allowed the wine to evolve, resulting in a complex profile showcasing savoury characteristics of smoked meat, black olive and subtle hints of violets, all underpinned by a firm acidity. The grapes originate from the Brune and Blonde slopes of Côte-Rôtie, where steep, terraced vineyards benefit from optimal sunlight exposure and a unique terroir rich in schist.

Full red-ruby. Aromatic nose of cherry, raspberry, smoked game and pepper. Suppler palate feel than the Hermitage, with lovely harmonious acidity framing the raspberry flavor. More pliant and perhaps longer than the Hermitage, relying more on its acidity than its tannins for structure. A distinctly northern, Burgundian style of Cote-Rotie, in the style of the vintage.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2000

Benchmark for Côte-Rôtie excellence

Founded in the village of Ampuis by Etienne Guigal in 1946, Domaine Guigal is one of the most revered and unwaveringly consistent estates in the Rhône Valley, and is often seen as a benchmark for Côte-Rôtie Syrah. A pioneer of the single-vineyard concept in this appellation Guigal is best known for its top three wines, known affectionately as the 'La-Las', which is short for La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque – the domaine's top Syrah vineyards .

Other notable vineyards of this 75-hectare estate include La Doriane (the source of Guigal's Condrieu), Ex-Voto (used for Hermitage) and Vignes de l'Hospice (the source of one of Guigal's top St-Joseph Syrahs). All of these have become benchmark wines of their respective appellations. The Crozes-Hermitage appellation completes the roster of Northern Rhône estate vineyards.

Since 2006, Guigal has made a substantial investment in appellations of the Southern Rhône, using top-quality purchased fruit from trusted growers in Châteaneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and the Côtes du Rhône.
