Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde Guigal 2005 is a mature Syrah from the Northern Rhône. This blend sources grapes from the iron-rich `Brune` slopes and the sandier `Blonde` slopes, creating a wine of immense structural complexity. The 2005 vintage allowed for complete, slow ripening, resulting in a profile of smoked meat, black olive, dark berries and violets. The Guigal family is famous for their rigorous selection and extended ageing in new oak, which imparts a polished, velvety tannic structure that supports the intense, savoury character of the Syrah fruit.

Bright red. Intensely perfumed, sexy bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry, kirsch, Asian spices and potpourri. Suave, silky red berry flavors display liqueur-like depth and are nicely framed by fine-grained tannins. A sneaky note of licorice builds and carries through the long, sweet finish of this precise wine. There are 270,000 bottles of this.Josh Raynolds1st January 2009

Benchmark for Côte-Rôtie excellence

Founded in the village of Ampuis by Etienne Guigal in 1946, Domaine Guigal is one of the most revered and unwaveringly consistent estates in the Rhône Valley, and is often seen as a benchmark for Côte-Rôtie Syrah. A pioneer of the single-vineyard concept in this appellation Guigal is best known for its top three wines, known affectionately as the 'La-Las', which is short for La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque – the domaine's top Syrah vineyards .

Other notable vineyards of this 75-hectare estate include La Doriane (the source of Guigal's Condrieu), Ex-Voto (used for Hermitage) and Vignes de l'Hospice (the source of one of Guigal's top St-Joseph Syrahs). All of these have become benchmark wines of their respective appellations. The Crozes-Hermitage appellation completes the roster of Northern Rhône estate vineyards.

Since 2006, Guigal has made a substantial investment in appellations of the Southern Rhône, using top-quality purchased fruit from trusted growers in Châteaneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and the Côtes du Rhône.
