Domaine Bernard Burgaud comprises 4 hectares of Syrah vineyards nestled in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, situated within the town of Ampuis. The rugged terrain makes mechanization impossible and requires a predominantly manual winemaking process. The 1999 vintage represents a splendid, mature Côte-Rôtie. It boasts lovely floral aromas, notes of well-aged meat, subtle white pepper, hints of wood smoke, and dark berry fruit. It strikes a harmonious balance, offering sufficient acidity and length, though it doesn`t exhibit an overwhelming fruit density.

The 1999 Cote Rotie will rival the finest Burgaud has produced. An opaque ruby/purple color is followed by a tight but blossoming bouquet of blackberries, hickory smoke, damp earth, underbrush, and licorice. The wine is full-bodied, chewy, thick, but civilized. This inky, powerful, full-throttle 1999 possesses plenty of tannin, and enough acidity to provide definition. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2016.

Burgaud's muscular, sometimes sauvage style of Cote Rotie has lost none of its power and intensity, yet the old style, with a noticeable leathery brett component would appear to be a thing of the past.

Full, saturated ruby. Slightly roasted aromas of currant liqueur, cassis, leather and spices. Dense, fat and enveloping, with dark berry, licorice and leather flavors perked up by ripe acidity. Finishes with very ripe tannins and a strongly peppery quality. Not yet showing quite the verve or nuance for a rating of outstanding, but this solidly built wine needs patience.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2002
