Wines from the iconic producer Gaja rank amongst the very finest the world has to offer, and Costa Russi is no exception. Generous ripe black spicy fruits with touches of cinnamon, underpinned by a silky tannic structure. There is plenty of backbone and vibrant acidity giving the wine focus and vigour. Keep it for another two to three years for maximum integration.

The 2017 Barbaresco Costa Russi is gorgeous. Dark, layered and wonderfully inviting, the Costa Russi expresses the restrained style of the vintage and yet has terrific depth. Black cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and star anise build as this sumptuous, classically mid-weight Barbaresco shows of all of its pedigree. The 2017 is a lighter Costa Russi, there is no doubt about that, but this is also the most complete of the three single vineyard Barbarescos.Antonio Galloni1st October 2020

Barbaresco. From the Roncagliette cru.Mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet cherry and bacon nose with hints of dried fruit. Savoury, sweet cherry palate shot through by lively, ripe acidity and bags of chewy tannins. The fruit seems a little marked by the heat, but will age gracefully. (WS)

Gaja

From Turin to Tuscany

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
