Costa Russi Gaja 1998 is crafted from Nebbiolo grapes sourced from the esteemed Barbaresco region. This mature vintage displays pronounced aromas of ripe cherries, dark plums and hints of menthol, alongside earthy undertones. The palate reveals a structured presence, marked by firm tannins and notes of fresh herbs. The wine’s acidity provides a backbone, allowing for nuanced complexity. Gaja’s dedication to quality winemaking is evident; he has been instrumental in elevating the prestige of Piedmont wines since the 1970s.
94 Vinous
(these vines are 38 years old) Deep saturated red. Wonderfully scented aromas of currant, smoked meat, dark chocolate and truffle. Lush, seamless and rich, with a near-perfect sugar/acid balance and great early appeal. The gamey note carries through in the mouth. A superb, very suave '98, showing well today. The Costa Russi has been more consistent beginning in '98, Gaja told me. It's probably due to the drier weather and more sun; the vineyard is adapting itself to our new, more California-like climate.Stephen Tanzer1st November 2002

Gaja

From Turin to Tuscany

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
