Cossart Gordon Verdelho 1975 is a single-harvest Madeira from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Cossart Gordon & Co was established in 1745 and is the oldest company in the Madeira wine trade. This single-harvest Madeira from 1975 is made from Verdelho grapes and was aged for 29 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system. The wine was bottled in 2004. Only 2,667 bottles were released. "Medium tawny/gold colour. Seems a bit flabby and displaying too much flat oxidation at first, and a teacake fruitiness only emerges reluctantly. The palate has a biscuity richness and quite a thick texture, with plenty of sweetness. There`s a lot of warmth and a Demerara sugar depth and toffeed sweetness here, but the grapefruity acidity is tangy and precise into the finish." Tom Cannavan, 2007

The 1975 Cossart Gordon Verdelho (2022 Bottling) has 88g/L residual sugar and 10.7g/L total acidity. It has a subtle nose: dried honey, Seville oranges, quite floral in nature with green olive scents coming through with time, later a very light espresso scent. The palate is medium-bodied with a tangy, bitter orange and marmalade infused opening. Quite powerful, almost “burly” in style, I like the hubris of this Verdelho and the impact on the resinous finish, a slight hint of curry powder and saffron lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent. 939 bottles produced. Neal Martin26th September 2022
