Château Cos d’Estournel, a distinguished Second Growth estate in Saint-Estèphe, is celebrated for its bold yet polished wines, crafted from its gravel and clay-limestone soils. Founded in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, the estate is known for its distinctive Moorish-style architecture and meticulous approach to winemaking.
The 1989 vintage is regarded as one of the finest of the decade for Bordeaux, and Cos d’Estournel’s expression in magnum format offers an impressive level of complexity and longevity. A classic Left Bank blend, this wine showcases a deep core of cassis, black cherry, and graphite, with secondary notes of cedar, tobacco, and truffle emerging with age. The structure is firm yet refined, with beautifully integrated tannins and a long, resonant finish. A benchmark Saint-Estèphe that continues to evolve gracefully.

The 1989 Cos d’Estournel is certainly showing more maturity on the rim compared to the 1990. Ten years ago I remember the aromatics being very attractive and yet, they appear to have faded in recent years with autumn leaf, bay leaf and cigar box aromas. The bouquet lacks vigor and charm. The palate is well balanced with gritty tannin, slightly bitter in style and missing the flesh of the 1990, showing some attenuation towards the finish. It is certainly not even in the same league as the 1989 Montrose. I suggest that bottles are best consumed sooner rather than later. Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical at the property.Neal Martin23rd December 2024
