Cos d`Estournel 1982 is a Left Bank Bordeaux from the esteemed Saint-Estèphe appellation. The estate was established in the early 19th century by Louis Gaspard d`Estournel. This vintage comprises a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, reflecting the estate’s characteristic style. Initial aromas suggest ripe dark fruits, intertwined with hints of savoury herbs and mild spices. On the palate, the wine reveals complexity, featuring a structure defined by firm tannins and a mineral edge. A standout wine from a legendary vintage.

It has been several years since I last tasted the 1982 Cos d'Estournel. This has an elegant bouquet with refined red fruit, cedar and brown spices, with hints of aniseed and peppermint surfacing with aeration. It is not profoundly complex but it is difficult to resist its charms. The palate has a conspicuously ripe and generous entry, rounded and a little meaty in style, with cracked black pepper. With fine grip, this Saint-Estèphe coheres with style on the finish. It is not quite as good as the bottle opened at the château, though it proves that there is plenty of life in this '82. Tasted single blind at the 1982 dinner at Cornus in London. Neal Martin2nd December 2025

Very healthy crimson. Lovely warm ripeness on the nose with some development. Really stunning class. Lively and a certain raciness yet definitely very ripe. A little kick of tannins at the end but delightfully complete. (JR)
