2010 was an incredible vintage in Bordeaux and this is a towering effort from Saint-Estèphe estate, Cos d’Estournel. Composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot it is immensely complex, concentrated and muscular, with exceptionally tightly-wound tannins, deep layers of fruit and delicious savoury nuances. Perhaps a little young still, this has an incredibly long and distinguished life ahead of it.

The 2010 Cos d'Estournel is cut from a different cloth to the previous vintage. This is much fresher on the nose and crucially displays more typicité, yet it delivers just as much punch as the 2009. Black fruit commingles with melted tar and smoke. A sprig of wild mint surfaces with continued aeration. The palate possesses immense gravitas and dimension, analogous to a magnificent suspension bridge. It is less ostentatious than the 2009, with firmer grip and greater control and sapidity on the finish. Whilst I can understand some might prefer the 2009, the 2010 Cos d'Estournel is just more...Cos d'Estournel, though be warned, it would still benefit from a couple more years in bottle. Magnificent.

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. 55% of total production. A real tonic. Very, very deep blackish crimson. Real energy and vitality and racy stuff. Pure, refined perfect Cabernet – pretty rich and alcoholic underneath but much, much drier and more appetising than either the 2009 – or the average Napa Cabernet, for example. Minerals and fruit in a lovely tincture. Such great texture and nobility. Racy thoroughbred Great balance and potential. Purity and energy – but you’ll need to wait so long for it! Tasted 17 Feb. Finished blend. Very dark indeed. Glossy blackish purple. Very intense, with some freshness. Still extremely young but with almost brutal mulberry(fruit and massive tannins but no suggestion of overripeness. Very ambitious. (Score 17.5+ 20-40) (JR)
