Currently owned by French entrepreneur Michel Reybier, Cos d`Estournel is the highly regarded wine producer situated in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the Médoc. Most of its releases are high scorers among the critics, making it a particularly appealing wine for collectors and investors. This is the 1982 vintage of its Grand Vin, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. A pronounced bouquet boasting dark berries, tobacco and minerality sets the scene. The palate is beautifully layered, with a fresh dark fruit core, followed by crushed stones, herbs, tobacco and truffles.

It has been several years since I last tasted the 1982 Cos d'Estournel. This has an elegant bouquet with refined red fruit, cedar and brown spices, with hints of aniseed and peppermint surfacing with aeration. It is not profoundly complex but it is difficult to resist its charms. The palate has a conspicuously ripe and generous entry, rounded and a little meaty in style, with cracked black pepper. With fine grip, this Saint-Estèphe coheres with style on the finish. It is not quite as good as the bottle opened at the château, though it proves that there is plenty of life in this '82. Mid ruby. Very heady and rich and opulent on the nose – much more life than the Pichon Lalande. Thick, dense, though the introvert nose is not immediately fruity. Some dust. Still lots of tannins – dangerously so perhaps. It hardly seems ready yet. A bit wild. Tastes a lot older than it smells however. Very drying finish. Needs food! I wonder whether this will always be a bit overwhelming by its heavy tannic charge. (JR)
