Currently owned by French entrepreneur Michel Reybier, Cos d`Estournel is the highly regarded wine producer situated in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the Médoc. Most of its releases are high scorers among the critics, making it a particularly appealing wine for collectors and investors. The 1981 vintage offers enticing aromas of ripe cherries, dried figs, old leather and some horse stable. The palate combines ripe fruit notes with tertiary notes, complemented by fully integrated, silky tannins.

The 1981 Cos d’Estournel is an off-vintage that I had not tasted for many years, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. Clear in color, it shows commensurate maturity given its 37-years of age. Maybe I was hoping, against the odds, that it would offer more on the nose, but if feels a little fragile and leafy, a timeworn bouquet whose greenness shows through. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannin, but this 1981 is redeemed by a modicum of attractive spicy, tarry fruit that emerges right on the dry and short finish. Drink sooner rather than later. Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical at the property.Neal Martin23rd December 2024
