Domaine de la Vougeraie is an estate created through the amalgamation of several holdings acquired by the Boisset family in the Côte d`Or. It is one of the newer properties in Burgundy, with the first vintage being 1999. The 2018 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru spent 16 months in oak barrels, 30% new. The nose is complex, showing black and red fruits, spices and hints of menthol and minerality. The palate is well-balanced, fruity and balsamic, with a touch of smokiness. The finish is prolonged, both refreshing and savoury.

The 2018 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has a slightly dour nose with straightforward brambly red fruit, sous-bois and just a hint of wild mint. It seems to struggle after 10 minutes in the glass, clouded by self-doubt. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite strict and "correct", chewy, balanced but missing the complexity one expects of a Grand Cru. Needs to put more effort in. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. Neal Martin22nd November 2022
