Corton-Charlemagne Domaine Leroy 1990 is a Grand Cru white Burgundy that exemplifies the Chardonnay from the prestigious Corton hill. Produced under the guidance of Lalou Bize-Leroy, the wine is crafted using biodynamic practices. The 1990 vintage in Burgundy was marked by ripe fruit, resulting in a wine that often presents a pronounced character. Aromas typically include citrus, green apple and minerality, along with hints of petrol and honey. On the palate, it displays power and concentration, with a length that invites contemplation.

The 1990 Corton-Charlemagne prompts the question, why cannot everyone do that? After 27 years this is still so energetic and vital, storming from the nose with mineral-rich citrus fruit that are quite Puligny-like in style. The palate is surprisingly focused and linear for a 1990, disguising completely that warmth of that summer (much more than the 1990 Montrachet from Comtes-Lafon served prior to it). There is something regal and imposing about this Corton-Charlemagne, maybe aloof but totally captivating. How I wish all Corton-Charlemagnes aged like this. Tasted at the mature white Burgundy dinner in Hong Kong. Neal Martin1st May 2019

Burgundian Royalty

The Leroy name is a key pillar of the Burgundian wine scene and a leading light in the Côte d'Or, with three main strands: Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy and Domaine d'Auvenay (a small, biodynamically farmed Domaine founded by Lalou in 1988).

In 1988, recognising the trend towards domaine bottling in Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy purchased what would become Domaine Leroy: an estate situated in Vosne-Romanée (previously known by the name Domaine Noëllat). Domaine Leroy labelled wines are thus are produced from parcels of grapes grown on the 22ha of domaine-owned Côte d'Or vineyards, which span nine different Grand Crus. These wines are produced biodynamically and at extremely low yields, resulting in superbly concentrated expressions of the Burgundian terroir.
