Bouchard Père et Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest wine estates dating back to 1731. It is also one of the largest landowners in the Côte d’Or, with vineyard holdings totalling approximately 130 hectares. This particular cuvée comes from the Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne, where Bouchard owns a 3.65-hectare plot. With its delicate balance and refined character, this Corton-Charlemagne reveals a charming expression of the 2011 vintage.

Good bright, pale yellow. Racy, high-strung nose combines lime, powdered stone, iodine and lavender. Juicy and penetrating yet at the same time silky and thick, communicating outstanding tension to its steely mineral-driven flavors. Wonderfully dense yet light on its feet, this vibrant, gripping wine is a classic example of its vineyard. Very long and a bit youthfully sharp on the finish, in need of at least four or five years of cellaring.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2013

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2011 from Bouchard Père & Fils has quite an austere bouquet that is missing some fruit concentration, some pyrazine and reductive notes developing in the glass. The palate is taut and grassy on the entry, again with some pyrazine notes coming through and rendering this a little facile and hard. This is disappointing in the context of both vineyard and other wines from this Burgundy stalwart.Neal Martin30th November 2014

Timeless legacy in Burgundy’s heart

Established in 1731, Maison Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest and largest wine estates in the Côte d’Or. In 1995, the estate was acquired by the Henriot family, whose portfolio also includes William Fèvre, Beaux Frères, Château de Poncié and Champagne Henriot. Bouchard boasts vineyard holdings totalling approximately 130 hectares, including 74ha of Premiers Crus and 12ha of Grand Crus, with as many as 450 different individual plots. While the maison’s vast mosaic of holdings are weighted towards the Côte de Beaune, the Côte de Nuits is also a major focus.

The maison’s original vineyard was purchased by Joseph Bouchard in Volnay Les Caillerets in 1775. Not long after Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus followed. Now one of four Bouchard monopole vineyards, Beaune Grèves Vignes de l’Enfant Jésus was once owned by the Carmelite order of nuns and is the source of Bouchard’s flagship wine. Bouchard’s extensive suite of wines is produced and aged at the state-of-the-art, gravity-fed Cuverie Saint Vincent in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Once bottled, the wines are stored beneath the historic Château de Beaune, built in the 15th century by King Louis XI and purchased by Bernard Bouchard in 1820.

With almost 300 years of savoir-faire, from its unrivalled multiplicity of terroirs, Bouchard stands as one of the most eminent names in Burgundy winemaking.
