Noël Verset was widely regarded as a Cornas winemaking icon, especially admired for his steadfast commitment to cultivating vines on the most challenging slopes. His adherence to traditional winemaking methods served as a model for numerous contemporary vintners in the region. This approach entailed limited grape yields, achieving optimal ripeness, employing cement vats for fermentation, and maturing the wines in well-aged demi-muids. Despite owning prized Cornas terroirs such as Chaillots, Reynard, and Sabarotte, Verset remained devoted to producing just one cuvée, thoughtfully composed from all of his vineyard plots. This release from the 1997 vintage is still singing, bursting with green bell pepper, cassis, green olive, mushroom, wild game and cedar chest.

Vinous
From another overlooked and often undervalued vintage, the 1997 Cornas shows a surprisingly youthful color, with smoky cherry and raspberry scents and notes of black olive, cracked pepper and pipe tobacco. Spicy, focused and light on its feet, it has silky, vaguely pinot-like texture and very good clarity to its sweet red fruit and spicecake flavors. It finishes bright and nervy, with no obvious tannins and lingering florality. While fully mature I wouldn't be at all surprised to find this wine drinking well ten years from now.Josh Raynolds1st January 2015
