Concha Y Toro Don Melchor 2021 is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the Alto Maipo Valley of Chile. Don Melchor is the jewel in the crown of the Concha y Toro portfolio. It is named after the founder of the estate, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, who founded what would go on to become one of the most successful wine companies in the world, in 1883. Produced from Cabernet vines in the prized Andes-influenced terroir of Puente Alto in the Alto Maipo Valley, the 2021 Don Melchor is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot, and was matured for 15 months in French oak barrel. This is one of the best vintages in recent years, displaying tremendous aromatic complexity and fruit expression.

The 2021 Don Melchor is dark garnet red in the glass. The restrained nose offers pure fruity notes such as blackcurrant with hints of leaves and black tea, refined woody aromas, and gentle touches of plum and red bell pepper. In the mouth, it’s intense with mild juiciness and rounded tannins. The taut palate gradually grows more profound as it develops cedar flavors at the back of the throat before the long, rewarding finish. A wine that is more suggestive than explicit as it slowly envelops you in its different layers. The added freshness brings out the clarity of the fruity flavors. — Joaquin Hidalgo, 1st June 2023

The 2021 Don Melchor is, to my palate, the most classic and timeless iteration presented in this vertical. It opens with a well-balanced, composed and textbook bouquet of cigar box, fresh herbs, blackberries and pencil shavings. On the palate, it is sumptuous yet elegant, combining a sleek, refined texture with the soft, gentle richness that is characteristic of this blend. It concludes with a graphite-driven, chiseled finish framed by chocolate-tinged tannins and lasting persistence. It's a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot that spent 15 months in 68% new barrels, the rest second-use. — Matthew Luczy, 13th March 2025

93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot.Very grown up and complex. This really does stand head and shoulders above the rest in its complexity. See this tasting note. The star of my Christmas red-wine selection in 2024. (JR) — Jancis Robinson, 26th November 2024
