Don Melchor is the top-level wine from the illustrious Chilean winery, Concha y Toro, and has earned a reputation for consistently being one of the country’s highest quality red wines. This is a wonderful mature example composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Don Melchor Vineyard which sits at 650m elevation in the Puente Alto subzone of the Alto Maipo Valley. Now at peak maturity, this is a harmonious and elegant expression of the variety, perfect for serving alongside rich, slow-cooked meat dishes.

The dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 from an el nino vintage, has demure cassis and blackberry aromas. It is quite firm and tannic, yet has an admirable core of cassis liqueur, plum, and blackberry fruit, making it certainly one of the great successes of 1998 from South America. According to Tirado, "The success of this wine came from the fact that we harvested subparcel by subparcel, selecting the picking date exclusively by taste. All we cared about was getting physiological ripeness." Projected maturity. 2004-2014.
Congratulations to Concha y Toro and winemaker Enrique Tirado for this fascinating and enlightening lineup of delicious wines.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 13 months in French oak barrels (68% new, 32% second-use). El Niño vintage.Shaded garnet. Some rather animal notes on the nose. Very sweet, blackcurrant-pastille fruit. Big and vigorous but not too hot on the end. Though much more exuberant than some of the older vintages. Late picked because of El Niño – perhaps a bit forced?(JR)
