Established in 1992 by Ann Colgin, Colgin Cellars has rapidly established a solid reputation as one of the finest producers in Napa Valley. Ann’s lifelong love of wines from the Northern Rhone inspired the decision to plant clones from Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage in the rocky, volcanic soil of IX Estate. The 2013 vintage reveals captivating aromas of red raspberries and crushed rocks, interspersed with hints of peppered meats and barbecue spice rub. The vivid red flavours fill the palate along with perfectly plush tannins and strong notes of pure minerality.

The 2013 Syrah IX Estate is unbelievably young. I could have easily mistaken it for a far younger wine, with the exception that the tannins have pretty much melted away. Intense dark fruit, mocha, spice and leather all gradually open in the glass. Readers who enjoy more aromatic nuance should consider cellaring the 2013 for another few years, despite how delicious it is today. What a wine. Antonio Galloni9th May 2024
