Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first wine makers to venture into Marlborough. Cloudy Bay’s founder - David Hohnen - was convinced of its potential to produce great wine and invested in the best land of the region. Since then, Marlborough has risen to become New Zealand’s leading wine region, as well as one of the finest winemaking locations in the world. The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc is intense and vibrant. The nose is open, appealing and expressive, with ripe passionfruit, white peach and a hint of lime. The palate is deliciously concentrated and tropical, underpinned by nectarine and blossoms. Saline notes bring structure, while passionfruit and vibrant citrus acidity bring balance, all concluding on a wonderfully compelling finish.

Rocking the new label and proprietary glass, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is excellent. It’s soft and floral, with lashings of green apple, sweet pea, pink grapefruit, white currant, coriander and even kiwi fruit. Sensational wine. Cloudy Bay has a big reputation for a reason. They age, too, so keep that in mind. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. — Erin Larkin, 30th November 2023

Blended from 109 batches (up to 25% are rejected).
Lime juice, grassy, pure and intense. Impressively textural and powerful with great clarity of fruit. The acid is bright and persistent but the fruit keeps up. It is still a flag-bearer for the region. (RH) — Richard Hemming, 21st February 2023

Pioneering New Zealanders

One of the pioneers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in the 1980s, Cloudy Bay has not rested on its laurels – far from it. The company that Aussie winemaker David Hohnen (co-founder of Cape Mentelle) created is now synonymous not only with some of New Zealand’s finest examples of Sauvignon Blanc, but also Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and even traditional-method sparkling wine (see Pelorus).

Cloudy Bay’s winery is based in the Wairau Valley in the northeast of New Zealand's South Island. Most of the estate’s white wine vineyards are located across three sub-regions of the Wairau Valley, where a combination of a cool maritime climate, intense sun exposure and free-draining gravelly soils create wines with a rare vibrancy of flavour.

Cloudy Bay’s barrel-fermented Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc – launched back in 2000 –demonstrated the estate’s restless ability to challenge people’s perception of what to expect from wines of the Marlborough. In addition to its home region, since 2009, the company has also had a presence in Central Otago, where it produces its dark, brooding Te Wahi Pinot Noir.
