Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2023 is a premium Marlborough white that showcases the structural potential and textural depth of the Wairau Valley. This 2023 vintage is fermented in French oak barriques and large-format foudres, utilising a mix of indigenous and cultured yeasts to enhance complexity. It offers a sophisticated profile of ripe peach, lemon curd and toasted brioche, underpinned by a vibrant acidity and a subtle flinty note. A significant portion of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, resulting in a creamy, well-integrated palate that maintains a sense of poise and freshness. It is a benchmark New Zealand Chardonnay, balancing the region`s intense primary fruit with a polished and elegant winemaking style.

This is a ripe, generously oaked 2023 Chardonnay. This offers liberal vanilla, coconut, baking spices and toasted nuts with rich fruit tones that will have you thinking of nectarines or peaches as it slips down. Its appeal is in its purity and freshness. The 2023 has ripe fruit but it remains defined and finishes with line and focus but then this is Marlborough—lots of sunshine hours but a cool climate, which are plain to see in this wine. Pioneering New Zealanders

One of the pioneers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in the 1980s, Cloudy Bay has not rested on its laurels – far from it. The company that Aussie winemaker David Hohnen (co-founder of Cape Mentelle) created is now synonymous not only with some of New Zealand’s finest examples of Sauvignon Blanc, but also Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and even traditional-method sparkling wine (see Pelorus).

Cloudy Bay’s winery is based in the Wairau Valley in the northeast of New Zealand's South Island. Most of the estate’s white wine vineyards are located across three sub-regions of the Wairau Valley, where a combination of a cool maritime climate, intense sun exposure and free-draining gravelly soils create wines with a rare vibrancy of flavour.

Cloudy Bay’s barrel-fermented Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc – launched back in 2000 –demonstrated the estate’s restless ability to challenge people’s perception of what to expect from wines of the Marlborough. In addition to its home region, since 2009, the company has also had a presence in Central Otago, where it produces its dark, brooding Te Wahi Pinot Noir.
