Clos-Saint-Denis Domaine Dujac 1986 is a Grand Cru Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. The Seysses family employs a signature winemaking style involving a high proportion of whole-cluster fermentation, which imparts a structural lift and distinct herbal perfume to the wine. This 1986 bottling showcases the elegance of the estate, where the limestone-heavy soils of the appellation have allowed the wine to evolve into a complex, savoury expression. It features resolved tannins and a persistent, spicy finish of red cherry, sandalwood, forest floor and subtle game that reflects the longevity of the vintage.

The 1986 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is one of the surprises of this vertical, since that year was not considered a great vintage in the Côte d’Or. It displays wonderful, life-enhancing transparency on a nose of pure floral elements, the pressed rose petals and lilac emerging with time but sensibly remaining behind the expressive red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied but becomes “broad-shouldered” with time, exerting a firm grip. Relatively spicy and peppery in nature. A purist might sniffily decry this as rather “uncouth”; however, it is a Clos Saint-Denis with tons of charm and freshness, and it will give another decade of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Clos Saint-Denis vertical at Hide restaurant. Neal Martin1st March 2020

A Focus on Terroir

Founded in the late 1960s by Jacques Seysses, who purchased and renovated Domaine Graillet in Morey-St-Denis. The estate is currently run by Jacques' sons Jeremy and Alec, who farm around 17 hectares of vines across the Côte including holdings in Echezeaux, Clos de la Roche, Charmes-Chambertin and Bonnes Mares.

A natural approach is taken in the vineyard and cellar with the estate moving from organic farming to fully biodynamic in the mid 2000s, receiving their certification in 2011. The team's focus is on elegance - temperatures are controlled to keep alcohol in check and also limit malolactic fermentation while juice from the crush is fed into the cellar by gravity only without the use of pumping. The wines of Domaine Dujac represent pure, balanced expressions of their respective terroirs.
