Clos L’Église 1998 hails from the renowned Pomerol region of Bordeaux, from a producer with roots tracing back to the 18th century. This vintage presents a complex profile characterised by ripe blackcurrant and plum, interspersed with earthy nuances and hints of truffle. Its structure is robust, offering a full-bodied weight that reveals a subtle interplay of oak. The finish is notably lengthy, encouraging contemplation. Originally known for its pronounced wood influence, this wine has developed into a refined expression over time, exemplifying the evolution of Clos L’Église.
93 Robert Parker
A classic Pomerol, the 1998 boasts a superb, complex bouquet of mocha fudge, vanilla, black cherries, roasted coffee, smoke, and berries. The dazzlingly explosive aromatic display is followed by a creamy-textured, medium to full-bodied, beautifully-layered wine with no hard edges. A supple texture leads to a finish with notes of caramel and spice that lingers for over 40 seconds. This is a gorgeous, complex Pomerol. Anticipated maturity. 2002-2018. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
90 Vinous
The 1998 Clos l’Eglise has an attractive bouquet with melted, brambly red berry fruit laced with undergrowth, black truffle and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a sprinkling of white pepper and clove towards the finish. This has held up well, with admirable density; although after 23 years, it undeniably lacks the refinement compared to recent vintages. Tasted at the Clos l’Eglise vertical.Neal Martin28th June 2022
