Clos du Clocher is a small estate in Pomerol that, since the sublime 2009 and 2010 vintages, has been consistently producing excellent wines yet continues to fly somewhat under the radar. A blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, this is a classically wrought Pomerol, offering up delightful notes of plums, blackberries, bitter chocolate, tobacco and spices. Rich but never overwhelming, there is ample structure and acidity to see this last well into the next decade.

The 2017 Clos du Clocher has turned out beautifully. Rich, ample and voluptuous in feel, the 2017 has so much to offer. Juicy dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha abound in a plush, open-knit Pomerol that has so much to offer. This is such a delicious and compelling wine. Relatively high acidity compared to 2010 and 2016 in this lineup, and the fruit is fresher, still with density and vivid cherry and cassis, alongside pomegranate and touches of redcurrant. As it softens in the glass, this turns into a delicously balanced glass of Pomerol, already open at seven years old, plenty to enjoy. Good stuff.
