Clos de Tart is a 7.5-hectare monopole Grand Cru vineyard located just south of Morey-St-Denis and, with Sylvain Pitiot at the helm since 1996, quality and consistency has increased extraordinarily in recent years. With meticulous attention to detail paid to work in both the vineyard and cellar, Clos de Tart Grand Cru is crafted from the best plots of older vines. Though inevitably destined to be overshadowed by more famous vintages, the 2001 is lovely wine that is in its peak drinking window.

Bright, fresh medium red. Shimmering perfume of red fruits, caramel, truffle, porcini and damp earth. Wonderfully vibrant and complex in the mouth, offering terrific precision to the flavors of black cherry, mulch, tar and smoke; there's a faint noble vegetility here that reminds me of a young Romanée-Conti! Tannins are serious and present but arrive late and avoid dryness. This intoxicating, nuanced wine is just rounding into form and should go on for many more years.Stephen Tanzer1st April 2017
