The 1989 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is one of the surprises of the tasting. I am not a huge fan of the vintage in Burgundy, so in my eyes, the 1989 overperforms. It has a very respectable bouquet, probably better than a lot of run-of-the-mill ‘89s from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Yes, there is a touch of herbaceousness (though not to the same extent as the 1988), pressed rose petals and iris. The palate is medium-bodied with fine weight in the mouth, tapering in a little toward the finish when you want it to fan out. It just runs out of ideas two-thirds of the way through. Still, it represents an enjoyable Clos de Tart that is drinking perfectly now. Tasted at the Clos de Tart vertical at Ten Trinity in London. Neal Martin1st February 2019
