Domaine Chantal Rémy Clos de la Roche is a Grand Cru red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits. The 2012 vintage comes from a two-hectare holding within this prestigious site, where the thin soils over hard limestone yield wines of great transparency. Rémy follows traditional winemaking practices, including partial whole-cluster fermentation and modest use of new oak. This approach highlights the earthy, savory complexity of the vineyard. The 2012 wine displays a refined profile of red cherries, forest floor and dried flowers, supported by fine-grained tannins and a persistent mineral finish.

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from Domaine Chantal Remy showed reductive out of barrel, but even then I felt there was a great wine lurking somewhere...and so it has turned out to be. Here, it has a more primal bouquet than Roche de Bellene`s Clos de la Roche 2012, with blueberry and cassis fruit joining the blackberry here, very fine definition, the oak tangible but integrated nicely. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, nuanced and understated on the entry, yet gaining intensity as it builds towards a complex finish, more red than black fruit infused with sage and morel mushroom aromas. This is already brimming over with personality, though it has a long way to go.
