The history of Maison Camille Giroud is long and complex, with many periods of immense struggle and several changes of ownership. Saved by investors in 2001 when Bernard and François Giroud retired, a period of relative stability and success has ensued. Now under the direction of Carel Voorhuis, the future for this Maison looks to be in good hands.
This is a fabulous release of Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from the sublime 2018 vintage. Using fruit sourced from vines planted in the 1960s and 1990, it was fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 228-litre and 600-litre oak barrels. This will need time in the cellar before it is approachable but will easily age for up to 20 years.
Vinous
The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is 100% whole cluster and matured in 25% new oak. It has a marvelous bouquet with blackberry, briar, crushed stone and wilted rose petals bursting from the glass. The very well-defined palate displays crisp acidity. A structured and correct Clos de la Roche with an endearingly spicy, black-pepper-tinged finish that lingers wonderfully. Excellent.
