Clos Cantenac 2018 is a Bordeaux blend primarily comprising Merlot, sourced from the estate’s older vineyards situated on the clay-limestone terroirs of Saint-Émilion. Harvested in late September, the grapes were picked in ideal early morning conditions, allowing for optimal ripeness. The wine displays a dense dark purple hue. Its aromatic profile includes notes of black cherry, plum and subtle hints of spice. On the palate, there is a defined fruit richness with tones of dark chocolate and a firm structure. The estate, Clos Cantenac, has been family-owned for generations, emphasising traditional methods in winemaking.

Vinous
The 2018 Clos Cantenac is quite a different proposition than the wine encountered in barrel. Since then, it has developed more black fruit and taken on quite a fair whack of oak that is pretty vocal at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. There is a veneer of dark chocolate that covers the fruit and will require 3–4 years to be assimilated. My main quibble is that is just misses a bit of energy and needs more elegance on the graphite-tinged finish. Neal Martin1st March 2021
