Château Clinet is a prestigious wine estate in the Pomerol appellation on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. The property has a long history dating back to the 16th century and is currently managed by Ronan Laborde and Monique Bailly. The wines of Château Clinet are predominantly made from Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc also in the blend. The 2020 vintage was marked by a very rainy spring, followed by a hot and particularly dry summer. While the grapes harvested at full maturity were small in size, their health was outstanding.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Clinet needs a lot swirling to coax out notes of stewed plums, blackberry pie, red currant jelly, and black olives, leading to wafts of tilled earth, underbrush, and cedar chest. The decadently rich, full-bodied palate is packed with layer-upon-layer of opulent black fruits with compelling red berry accents and a firm, velvety texture, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. It’s a wine that will require a little more patience than some of the other top Pomerol 2020s, but it will be a real showstopper in 7-10 years.Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th March 2023

Vinous
The 2020 Clinet has quite a lot of new oak to be subsumed on the nose, and at the moment, it is disguising the DNA of this château. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and pointed acidity, slightly bitter but with a pleasing salinity on the finish. I am intrigued to see how this ages, but it is not showing its best right now (another bottle tasted in April 2024 performed much better). Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.Neal Martin12th November 2024
