Premier Cru Classé Sauternes wine producer from the Barsac appellation, Château Climens boasts a reputation for producing world-class sweet wines. The 1997 vintage was reviewed by the Wine Spectator as follows, `Masses going on in this glass. Superconcentrated, with aromas of honey, flowers, lemon curd and spice. Full-bodied and very thick, with lots of sweet fruit and a long, spicy finish. A beauty.`
94 Jancis Robinson
Consistently one of the most profound wines of Barsac/Sauternes, this wine, made from 100% Semillon, is one of the most ravishing examples of just how much elegance can be built into a powerful race horse style of wine. The classic 1997 Climens boasts gorgeously pure pineapple, citrus, butter, mineral, and floral scents in its soaring aromatics. While it is not a blockbuster, it is medium to full-bodied, with extraordinary precision, elegance, and purity. This slightly sweet Climens should drink well young, but evolve nicely for 15-30 years. It is unquestionably a high-class Barsac. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025.

The 1997 Climens is a wine that I have tasted three of four times, but it has never convinced me that it is a top-drawer offering. It has quite a powerful, rather mushroom-like bouquet with apricot and dried honey, though I would have liked a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied though never really "lifts off", the finish just missing a bit of presence. A rare slipped catch from this estate? It would seem so.Neal Martin1st August 2022
