Climens 1990 is a mature-vintage sweet wine from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux in south-west France. Château Climens is a Premier Cru Classé Sauternes producer and one of the leading producers of sweet wine in Bordeaux. Produced from 100% Semillon from vineyards in the Barsac appellation, Climens Sauternes is fermented in barrel and aged in barriques (30% new) for 22 months. Renowned for its elegance, finesse and profound longevity (good vintages can age well for comfortably more than 50 years), Château Climens pairs spectacularly well with Roquefort-type cheeses and foie gras. Maturer vintages complement rich but more savoury foods, including spicy Asian dishes. "Gorgeous. Yellow colour with a gold hue. Aromas of vanilla, honey and lemon, with a hint of biscuit. Full-bodied, very sweet, with a thick texture and a long, fruity finish. Will easily age, but why wait?--1990 Bordeaux retrospective." Wine Spectator, 2000

- The 1990 Climens has a very elegant bouquet, beautifully defined with marmalade, quince and sugar barley that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with real intensity, stem ginger and lemongrass, a fine bead of acidity. Poised and penetrating with a long but not overdone finish, this 1990 Climens is à point. Superb. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022.

TA 4.4 g/l (sulphuric), RS 140g/l. Massive (!) yield of 23 hl/ha. Medium deep orangey gold. Very long fermentation (10 weeks) because of the richness of the musts. Excellent harvest conditions and huge development of botrytis. Extreme complexity on the nose, barley sugar, spiced orange and apricot, rich but very zesty. Stunning concentration and depth of flavour but with great acidity to balance . Gloriously mouthfilling and generous but beautifully balanced. (JH)
