The 1976 Château Climens is an excellent example of an aged Barsac wine, made from 100% Semillon grapes affected by noble rot. The 1976 vintage in Bordeaux was characterized by an unusually hot and dry summer, resulting in small, concentrated grapes with intense flavours. Over time, the 1976 Château Climens has developed a deep amber-gold colour. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of dried apricot, candied citrus, honey, caramel, and exotic spices. The palate is rich and luscious, with a pronounced sweetness balanced by a bright acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lively. Layers of dried fruits, marmalade, and spice unfold on the palate, leading to a long and persistent finish.

The 1976 Climens contains 116g/L residual sugar and is quite youthful considering its age. It has a beautiful nose with barley sugar, Manuka honey, white chocolate and praline scents that emerges with time. Very focused. The palate is perfectly balanced with a fine line of acidity, elegant and poised. Focused towards the finish with a touch of ginger that vibrantly lingers. What a brilliant Climens. Rich waves of saffron and marmalade, feels almost bone dry on the palate at this point but the texture remains opulent and luscious. Tertiary white truffle and figs, very much in its drinking window, soft on the finish. 33% new oak.Jane Anson4th May 2026

Quite fat and advanced in evolution for Climens, the 1976 is drinking gorgeously now. Charmingly fruity, with an expansive bouquet of ripe fruit, fresh honey, a vanillin oakiness, and some subtle herbal notes, this medium-bodied wine has average acidity, and a plump, soft texture. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/88.Robert Parker1st January 1998
