Taking its name from the Irish family that bought the estate in 1771, Château Clarke was purchased by Baron Edmond de Rothschild in 1973. The 1998 vintage is a Merlot drive blend, with a smaller percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon making up the remainder. Notes of blackcurrant and raspberries mingle with pepper and spice character.

The 1998 Clarke was tasted from two bottles, the first showing some oxidation. The second was much better with brambly red fruit, briar, undergrowth and leather aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, moderate depth, black pepper and sage notes toward the finish that now feels fully mature. Fine. Tasted at the château.Neal Martin25th March 2025
