Chivas Regal Takumi Reserve 12 Year Old is an inspired collaboration between Scotland and Japan, created as a tribute to Japan’s dynamic, ever-evolving traditions. Conceived by the Chivas Regal Master Blender, this innovative release reimagines the possibilities of cask finishing. The process begins with oak casks that once held Chivas Regal whisky, which are then used to mature Masuizumi, a distinguished sake from Toyama Prefecture.

These sake-seasoned casks are subsequently used to finish a portion of 12-year-old Chivas Regal, resulting in a whisky of remarkable character. The final spirit is a seamless fusion of Chivas Regal’s hallmark richness and smooth, honeyed depth, lifted by delicate fruit notes and a subtle aromatic elegance imparted by the sake cask influence.

While labelled as “whisky” under Japanese law, this release does not conform to Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) guidelines due to the unconventional cask finish. As a result, it is classified as a “Spirit Drink” in Japan. To meet the technical requirements of this classification, a minute quantity of hop flavour is added — undetectable on the palate and with no impact on aroma or taste.

Chivas Regal

Scotland's First Luxury Blend

Founded in 1786, Chivas Regal is the oldest continually operating distillery in the Highlands and one of the most recognisable Scotch whisky brands in the world. The brand started life as a 25-year-old whisky, which was blended with a high ratio of malt in order to woo the burgeoning middle-class of America. In effect, Chivas Regal 25 Year Old became the world’s first luxury blended whisky.

Now selling well in excess of four million cases every year, Chivas produces around a dozen proprietary blended whiskies, from the flagship Chival Regal 12 up to 18- and 25-year-old age-statement bottlings.

Chivas blended whisky is produced at the Strathisla distillery in Moray, Speyside and the core malt whisky in all Chivas Regal blends is the Strathisla single malt. This is supported by malts from a variety of other distilleries, including The Glenlivet, Longmorn, Allt-a-Bhainne, Miltonduff and Braeval, along with grain whiskies from Strathclyde in the Lowlands.
