Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie is a red Loire from the legendary Loire Valley estate Charles Joguet. This 2015 vintage originates from a two-hectare parcel of vines exceeding 80 years of age, situated on a north-facing slope of clay and limestone. Winemaking involves 100% de-stemming and fermentation in thermoregulated stainless steel to maintain the precision of the fruit. The wine was aged for 16 months in oak barrels, only 10% of which were new, to preserve the signature terroir. It presents a structured profile of dark plums, graphite and dried herbs, characteristic of the site`s ability to produce Cabernet Franc with significant ageing potential.

Joguet`s monopole 2015 Chinon Clos de la Dioterie is from 70- to 80-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils. A bit reduced at the beginning, this is a very spicy yet also very fine and intense Cabernet Franc that has a bit of Pinot behavior. Nice paprika flavors here. The palate is very elegant, intense and juicy, with very fine tannins that carry this Cabernet to a very long, intense, salty and promising finish. It’s tightly woven, concentrated but fresh and energetic. This is another excellent, perhaps more masculine Chinon compared to the Chêne Vert.

Quite a different style from 2017. Aged 22 months in barrique, mix of new and old barrels. A bit reductive and toasty. The nose is attractive but oaky, with notes of cedar, hay, green olive, and rosemary. Chewy on the palate, dense, dark fresh fruit, but still lean and tight. An outlier worth checking in on a couple years from now.Jason Wilson1st July 2020
