Henri Boillot Chevalier-Montrachet 2016 is a full-bodied Burgundy white wine from the Grand Cru climat of Chevalier-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune. Situated in Meursault, Domaine Henri Boillot strategically occupies a position between Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay, both appellations that have become its forte. The domaine`s Grand Cru 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet is available here in magnum format.
Vinous
- Bright light-medium yellow. Very sexy, quintessential Chevalier nose of citrus fruits and white peach, crushed rock and ginger, plus an element of smoky oak. A wonderfully glyceral wine with a powerful salty impression of extract and strong supporting acidity. Finishes chewy and very long, but without any excess weight. Juicy lemony cut gives this wine a distinctly crystalline quality. A classic Chevalier-Montrachet in the making. This and the Bâtard are in 100% new oak, while the Pucelles, Clos de la Mouchère and Combettes are around 50%, but Boillot notes that the larger (350-liter) format of his barrels is very important.

Father and Son

In some ways, Henri Boillot has one foot in the past and one in the present. His family domaine, which he manages with his son Guillaume, has a history dating back to the 1880s, but the wines produced from their Meursault-based winery are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. Alongside operating a highly successful négociant business, the Boillot family own around 14 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune including a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru monopole in the form of Clos de la Mouchère.

The winery don't shy away from the use of new oak and any overtly woody character is generally well balanced by ripe fruit. The Chardonnays range from citrus driven and fresher at the villages level all the way to ripe, tropical and creamy at the Grand Cru level. The reds are lighter and more elegant than they used to be with Henri's son Guillaume preferring a less extracted style of Pinot Noir.
