With Brice de la Morandière at the helm, Domaine Leflaive is one of the most highly-acclaimed estates in Burgundy. It incorporates 22ha of vineyards, including an envy-inducing 10ha of Premiers Crus and 5ha of prized Grands Crus. Under the stewardship of the late Anne-Claude Leflaive, the domaine became a pioneer in biodynamic farming in the region, achieving full conversion in 1997.

The Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is produced from 3 parcels totalling 1.8ha that were planted between 1955 and 1980. All fruit is meticulously sorted and hand-harvested in the vineyard, followed by fermentation in mostly seasoned oak casks and maturation for 12 months. This release is from the vastly underrated 2006 vintage and should be absolutely perfectly in its optimal drinking window.

After my review of a reconditioned bottle last year, this encounter with Domaine Leflaive`s 2006 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru was a salutary reminder of the reality consumers experience with this estate`s wines in the late 2000s and early 2010s—and above all in the 2006 vintage. Entirely oxidized, the wine was undrinkable.

Full yellow. Rather exotic aromas of pineapple, marzipan and toast. Fat, thick and dry, with the marzipan quality carrying through on the palate. More ripe apple and pear than stone or citrus fruits here. Finishes chewy and a bit tannic and aggressive, with a suggestion of imperfect skins and surmaturité. This wine has evolved quickly and is rather awkward today; I'm not sure where it can go with further aging. Lacks real depth and sweetness. The estate's 2006s also finished with higher than normal levels of residual sugar, as some rot may have resulted in higher levels of unfermentable sugar in the grapes. This wine has been cited for premox issues. (14% alcohol; 3.29 pH; the harvest, which began on September 20, was complicated by rain showers that withered the grapes and eventually turned them blue, according to Morandière, although he noted that the estate's Chevalier-Montrachet was picked before just before a damaging thunderstorm) Stephen Tanzer1st September 2019

Fine, fresh and even quite delicate – very tightly laced at present. Superlatively energetic yet with sort of filigree texture and transparency. Very long and very fine. (JR)

Domaine Leflaive

The pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine Leflaive has built a storied reputation for its commitment to biodynamic farming and exceptional craftsmanship. The estate owns 22 hectares of vineyards, including 10 hectares of Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet (Les Combettes, Les Pucelles, Le Clavoillon, Les Folatières), as well as no fewer than 5 hectares of Grands Crus (Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a tiny holding in Le Montrachet).

Joseph Leflaive, whose vision and dedication in the early 20th century were pivotal, transformed the domaine into a symbol of excellence. In the 1990s, Anne-Claude Leflaive introduced biodynamic practices, adhering to rigorous standards that respect the natural rhythms of the earth, promoting soil health and vine vitality without synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach results in Chardonnay wines celebrated for their purity, depth, and complexity. Each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit that have made Domaine Leflaive a revered name among wine enthusiasts.
