Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 2005 is a white Burgundy from the Grand Cru climat of Chevalier-Montrachet in the Puligny-Montrachet commune of the Côte de Beaune. Domaine Leflaive is one of the leading properties in Puligny and the Côte d`Or more generally, with vineyard holdings in many of the region`s most prized Premier and Grand Cru sites. Thanks to the far-sightedness of the late Anne-Claude Laflaive, the entire domaine has been certified biodynamic since 1997. Leflaive Grands Crus can be powerful yet austere when young and often require 10 to 15 years of ageing to show their true colours. Leflaive has been certified biodynamic since 1997. "When you happen upon a pristine bottle of Leflaive`s 2005 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, it`s a terrific wine that clearly rans among the white Burgundies of the vintage, and this was just such a bottle. Offering up a stunning bouquet of confit lemons, honeycomb, vine blossom and freshly baked bread, it`s full-bodied, ample and multidimensional, with incredible concentration, a firm chassis of structuring dry extract, lively acids and a long finish that still displays considerable youthful drive. This is a muscular, imposing Chevalier that nods to the 1989 vintage in style, though if anything it`s better balanced. Today, while it`s still a youthful wine, it`s beginning to arrive at early maturity, and it`s as pleasurable as it is impressive." Wine Advocate, 2019

Full yellow with a gold tinge. Very ripe aromas of dried yellow stone fruits, pineapple and chalky minerality. Then round, silky and seamless, offering lovely integrated acidity but relying even more on its minerality for balance (Morandière described this wine as a less extreme version of the 2015). At once tactile and smooth but still backward, offering mouthfilling flavors of apricot, citrus fruits and acacia flower that gained in depth as the wine took on oxygen. A very rich style but without any easy sweetness, this wine may well enjoy a 30-year lifespan. (13.7% alcohol; 3.22 pH; the harvest began on September 16 but the Chevalier-Montrachet came in on the 20th after a few days with a north wind that concentrated sugars and acids; still, this was a drought year with a blockage of maturity, according to Brice de la Morandière)Stephen Tanzer1st September 2019

The pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine Leflaive has built a storied reputation for its commitment to biodynamic farming and exceptional craftsmanship. The estate owns 22 hectares of vineyards, including 10 hectares of Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet (Les Combettes, Les Pucelles, Le Clavoillon, Les Folatières), as well as no fewer than 5 hectares of Grands Crus (Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a tiny holding in Le Montrachet).

Joseph Leflaive, whose vision and dedication in the early 20th century were pivotal, transformed the domaine into a symbol of excellence. In the 1990s, Anne-Claude Leflaive introduced biodynamic practices, adhering to rigorous standards that respect the natural rhythms of the earth, promoting soil health and vine vitality without synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach results in Chardonnay wines celebrated for their purity, depth, and complexity. Each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit that have made Domaine Leflaive a revered name among wine enthusiasts.
