The 2002 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru thankfully showed no premature oxidation. Burnished straw in hue, the Chevalier opens with a spine-tingling mix of lanolin, crushed limestone and freshly baked brioche, light apricot scents hovering in the background. It has thrilling delineation and focus, everything you expect from the late Anne-Claude Leflaive. The palate is built around razor-sharp acidity, though there is tangible weight and it feels concentrated for this vintage. The sapid, dry finish leaves you hankering for the next sip. The 2002 is a glorious Chevalier-Montrachet, and based on this showing, I do not believe it will gain anything from further bottle age. Neal Martin8th September 2025

Domaine Leflaive

The pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine Leflaive has built a storied reputation for its commitment to biodynamic farming and exceptional craftsmanship. The estate owns 22 hectares of vineyards, including 10 hectares of Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet (Les Combettes, Les Pucelles, Le Clavoillon, Les Folatières), as well as no fewer than 5 hectares of Grands Crus (Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a tiny holding in Le Montrachet).

Joseph Leflaive, whose vision and dedication in the early 20th century were pivotal, transformed the domaine into a symbol of excellence. In the 1990s, Anne-Claude Leflaive introduced biodynamic practices, adhering to rigorous standards that respect the natural rhythms of the earth, promoting soil health and vine vitality without synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach results in Chardonnay wines celebrated for their purity, depth, and complexity. Each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit that have made Domaine Leflaive a revered name among wine enthusiasts.
