This is a wonderful mature example of Chevalier-Montrachet Grand from Domaine Leflaive, made by winemaker of the time, Pierre Morey, and the late Anne-Claude Leflaive. Tasted in 2019 for The Wine Advocate, William Kelley described it as “full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep and concentrated core” with a drinking window extending to 2030.
94 Vinous
Full copper-tinged yellow-gold. Slightly gamey, wild aromas of yellow peach, apricot, orange zest, marzipan and grilled nuts suggest a fatter wine than the '96. Very powerful, dense and chewy on the palate; in fact, this wine is a bit extreme in its grainy concentration, as much like a solid as like a liquid. Classically dry flavors of very ripe yellow fruits, hazelnut, toasted bread and oatmeal are supported by terrific mineral verve. Not a juicy style of white Burgundy but extract-rich--and still with plenty of gripping acidity to carry it longer. (14% alcohol; 3.23 pH; the harvest began on September 25; the yield for this wine was a very low 25 hectoliters per hectare due mostly to very cool weather during flowering)Stephen Tanzer1st September 2019

Domaine Leflaive

The pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine Leflaive has built a storied reputation for its commitment to biodynamic farming and exceptional craftsmanship. The estate owns 22 hectares of vineyards, including 10 hectares of Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet (Les Combettes, Les Pucelles, Le Clavoillon, Les Folatières), as well as no fewer than 5 hectares of Grands Crus (Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a tiny holding in Le Montrachet).

Joseph Leflaive, whose vision and dedication in the early 20th century were pivotal, transformed the domaine into a symbol of excellence. In the 1990s, Anne-Claude Leflaive introduced biodynamic practices, adhering to rigorous standards that respect the natural rhythms of the earth, promoting soil health and vine vitality without synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach results in Chardonnay wines celebrated for their purity, depth, and complexity. Each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit that have made Domaine Leflaive a revered name among wine enthusiasts.
