Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 1981 is a mature-vintage Burgundy white wine from the Grand Cru climat of Chevalier-Montrachet in the Puligny-Montrachet commune of the Côte de Beaune. Domaine Leflaive Grands Crus can be powerful yet austere when young and often require 10 to 15 years of ageing to show their true colours. Leflaive has been certified biodynamic since 1997.

Bright orange color. Aromas of orange, dried apricot, marzipan and honey reminded me a bit of a nutty pastry dessert. Supple and moderately rich on entry, then firm and a bit dry in the middle palate, with flavors of orange zest, honey and marzipan framed by firm acidity. There's still an element of piquancy here that's refreshing. Finishes dry but not parching or short; in fact, this still builds subtly on the finish. But turned nutty in the glass, losing its verve more quickly than the '86 and '84 bottlings. Drink up.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2019

Domaine Leflaive

The pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine Leflaive has built a storied reputation for its commitment to biodynamic farming and exceptional craftsmanship. The estate owns 22 hectares of vineyards, including 10 hectares of Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet (Les Combettes, Les Pucelles, Le Clavoillon, Les Folatières), as well as no fewer than 5 hectares of Grands Crus (Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a tiny holding in Le Montrachet).

Joseph Leflaive, whose vision and dedication in the early 20th century were pivotal, transformed the domaine into a symbol of excellence. In the 1990s, Anne-Claude Leflaive introduced biodynamic practices, adhering to rigorous standards that respect the natural rhythms of the earth, promoting soil health and vine vitality without synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach results in Chardonnay wines celebrated for their purity, depth, and complexity. Each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit that have made Domaine Leflaive a revered name among wine enthusiasts.
