One of the most celebrated châteaux in Saint-Émilion, Cheval Blanc covers 39 hectares of vineyards bordering Pomerol. The estate benefits from the expertise of a talented winemaking team led by Pierre-Olivier Clouet, overseen by the esteemed Pierre Lurton. The 2021 vintage is a blend composed of 52% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine impresses with its exquisite texture, precise and tightly knit tannins. Medium to full-bodied, it reveals multiple layers of flavours, including black and blue fruit, mineral notes, hints of tar, dark cocoa, and a touch of spice. Subtle undertones of dried herbs add complexity. It boasts a long and persistent finish, maintaining its focused character throughout the palate.

Rich and explosive in feel, the 2021 Cheval Blanc is outrageously beautiful. For the first time since 2011, the Grand Vin is more than 50% Cabernet Franc. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and mocha are all amplified in this potent, luxurious Cheval Blanc. Polished, seamless tannins wrap it all together. This is one of my favorites of the vintage. Antonio Galloni27th February 2024

We are in an entirely different world of textured tannins, and dense fruit character compared to most, clearly among the red wines of the vintage. Showing an inky character, cigar box, cassis, bluberry, crushed roses, gunsmoke and flint nose along with powerful but understated blueberry and damson fruits. The 30th anniversary with Pierre Lurton as director, and the last official year as Premier Grand Cru Classé A - both things that put this firmly in the buy camp. Biggest percentage of Cabernet Franc since 2011, and the first time to use more Cabernet Franc than Merlot in the blend. 100% new oak.Jane Anson21st February 2024

A blend of 52% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, there were 72,000 bottles produced of Cheval Blanc 2021. It has a deep garnet-purple color and springs from the glass with energetic notes of kirsch, black raspberries, and wild strawberries, followed by suggestions of menthol, lavender, and cedar chest. The medium-bodied palate shimmers with red berry and mineral layers, supported by fine-grained tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long with loads of floral sparkles. So, so pretty!Lisa Perrotti-Brown23rd April 2024

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Rich and layered on the nose. Intriguing! More obvious charm and sweetness than some of its peers. There is complexity and potential here. (JR)

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
