Château Cheval Blanc is the highly regarded wine producer in Saint-Émilion owned by luxury group LVMH. This release is the 1997 vintage of its Grand Vin, a blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new oak barrels. The wine reveals a stunning hue reminiscent of precious ruby jewellery, graced by a mineral-rich nose with subtle hints of spearmint. The palate echoes its aroma profile, offering plenty of sweet mineral-infused fruits.

Medium-deep red. Plum, currant, mocha and brown spices on the nose. Lush and sweet, with moderate density and harmonious acidity. Perhaps a bit livelier in the mouth than on the nose. Not nearly as ripe on the back end as the '98, but has sneaky finishing flavor.Stephen Tanzer1st May 1999
87 Jancis Robinson
A seductive, fragrant style of Cheval Blanc, with moderate density and weight, this immediately appealing 1997 exhibits an exotic nose of coconut, plums, cherry liqueur, and sweet, toasty oak. The wine's alluring personality is accompanied by fine suppleness, low acidity, medium body, and current drinkability. Consume it over the next 7-9 years.Robert Parker21st April 2000

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
