Given the highest possible status of Premier Grands Crus Classé (A), Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the elite producers of St-Émilion and the wider Bordeaux region. The 1988 was the first in a trio of excellent quality vintages and, though perhaps not like the blockbuster releases that came after, this is an elegant and sapid wine with lovely notes of dark berry fruit, cigars and truffle. Drink now and over the next 2-3 years.

The 1988 Cheval Blanc is a vintage that I have tasted three times in recent months. It is an excellent vintage for the Saint-Émilion estate. Refined on the nose, black plum mixes with wild strawberry, iron filings (borrowed from Pomerol?) and hints of blood orange, with mocha in the background. A lot is going on here. The palate is a little spicier than a bottle opened at the property, wonderfully balanced with marjoram and white pepper sprinkled over the finish. What a lovely Cheval Blanc - perfect to drink now. Tasted at the 1988 Bordeaux dinner at Noble Rot Mayfair. Neal Martin2nd July 2024

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
